Birdwatching Tours in and Around Madrid.

It is amazing that not far away from a city as Madrid you can find some of the rarest birds of Europe.  There are many different habitats around Madrid like mountains, marsh and fields.  Madrid is a perfect destination to combine city sightseeing and birding.
Madrid is very good for birds of prey, especially for Spanish Imperial Eagle (only 150 pairs worldwide, 24 in Madrid), Golden Eagle, Black vulture (over 1.000 pairs worldwide) and Griffon vultures. Other relevant birds like Black stork (12 pairs), Great Bustard (around 800 birds), Little Bustard, Black-bellied Sandgrouse (over 12 pairs), Stone Curlew, Azure Magpie, Black Wheatear, Purple Swamphen, Red Kite, Black-shouldered Kite (few pairs) can be seen.

Migrant birds like Cranes, Booted eagle, Egyptian vulture, Short-toed Eagle, bee-eaters, Rollers, Golden oriole or Hoopoe can be seen depending on season.

There are different options to do a birding trip around Madrid. You can book a tour in the Madrid province. All this tours not further of 55 km from the city centre:
Madrid Tour 1: El Pardo natural reserve - plains and riverside area. Typical madrilean landscapes tour with Spanish Imperial Eagle, Great Bustard, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Black vulture, Blue rock thrush, Red-rumped Swallow such main targets. Many raptors might be observed.
Madrid Tour 2: Plains - riverside and eastern marshes. Looking for different raptor species such are Lesser Kestrel, Golden Eagle, Booted Eagle, Black vulture and others. Also White storks, Roller, Bee-eaters, Night heron or Great bustard could be observed.
Madrid Tour 3: Western Mediterranean forest. Typical Spanish hills and forest, with possibilities to observe relevant birds such are Spanish Imperial Eagle, Azure magpie, Black vulture, Black stork or Great Spotted Cuckoo.
Madrid Tour 4: Private tour, depending on requests following my recommendations. Visit 3 or 4 different hot spots.

Do you want to see even more birds consider trips to Guadalajara Province, wetlands of La Mancha the Toledo Province or Monfrague National Park.

Testimonials:
John Swales: I have been out birding twice on day trips around Madrid with Aitor. Both were excellent, transport, company, picnic lunch, birds found, all excellent. Indeed, on the second day, Aitor, My companion and I found a grand total of 14 raptor species in a single day, a total that I have never approached before, nor would hope to equal again (except with Aitor!) If anybody wants further information, I can be most easily reached at jmswales@umich.edu. John Swales. Professor Emeritus of Linguistics. The University of Michigan, USA

David Broughton: My wife and I went on a one day birding tour from Madrid which was ably guided by Aitor. We had a great time, as Aitor knows the best areas to see lots of raptors and such local specialties as Great Bustard. Aitor was very helpful in assisting us to identify the local birds and in making a special effort to find the species of interest to us. He was able to pick us up from our hotel in central Madrid and even packed a lunch for us. I would recommend Aitor’s services for anyone who is looking to do some birding in and around Madrid. br>

Rose Robert (London): We had a wonderful day with Aitor. Aitor was very knowledgable indeed about the birds and you took us to three (or was it four?) different places where we saw lots of birds - very impressive. It was very interesting and informative.

Dr. Hank Webster: The birding trip that Aitor arranged met our expectations and provided us an excellent introduction to the birds in the Madrid region. An added bonus was the opportunity to explore the surrounding landscapes and land uses which are quite different from northwestern Pennsylvania. The timing of our trip permitted us to observe a number of raptors, with the views of the Spanish Eagles being exceptional. Our day was well organized and efficiently conducted. My students and myself added significantly to our life lists. Thank you
